DeepSeek V4 Pro vs Claude Opus 5: cheap long context vs quality

FastMetal

If you want one pairing that shows the trade-off between cost and top-end quality, it's DeepSeek V4 Pro against Claude Opus 5. The first is a huge open-weight model under the MIT license; the second is Anthropic's closed flagship.

The verdict: run high-volume long-context work on V4 Pro, and give the hardest tasks to Opus 5.

Cost is the whole story

DeepSeek V4 Pro reworks the attention mechanism to cut the cost of long-context inference, and that is its main weapon: you can push million-token workloads through it in bulk at a price that still makes sense. On FastMetal its output tokens cost about a tenth of Opus 5's, and its input about a quarter.

Take one large task of 200,000 input tokens and 20,000 output tokens: about $0.33 on V4 Pro and $1.58 on Opus 5, close to five times the price. Run it 20 times a day for a 30-day month and that's roughly $200 against $950.

Claude Opus 5 is the quality pick. It carries tasks through instead of stopping at a stub, and in code review and bug finding it's reported to keep both precision and recall high. What you pay for that is the price, and, when this comparison was first written in July 2026, a launch with few trustworthy third-party benchmarks behind it.

The catches

V4 Pro: text only, and the famous benchmark isn't this model. It can't take images or files. And the widely quoted 80.6% on SWE-bench Verified belongs to the top "Max" variant, not the deepseek-v4-pro FastMetal serves. Treat it as a guide to what the series can do, not as this model's score.

Opus 5: long agent runs get expensive. Beyond the per-token price, long agentic sessions use a lot of tokens. Thinking is on by default, which adds to the bill and means a small max_tokens can cut a response off partway. Give it headroom.

Which to use where

  • DeepSeek V4 Pro: batch jobs over million-token inputs, anything where cost comes first, commercial projects that want a permissive license on the weights.
  • Claude Opus 5: the hardest implementation and review work where quality outranks cost, and anything that needs image or file input.

Try both with one key

On FastMetal it's the same API key and the same balance for both. You change model and nothing else.

FAQ

How big is the cost difference? On FastMetal, V4 Pro's output is $2.75 per million tokens against $26.38 for Opus 5, roughly a tenth. What you actually pay is price times usage, and a thinking model produces more output tokens than its visible answer.

Can I trust DeepSeek V4 Pro's benchmark numbers? The SWE-bench Verified 80.6% that gets quoted is the Max variant's, not deepseek-v4-pro's. Check it on your own tasks.

Which is better outside English? We couldn't find a published benchmark that isolates non-English quality for either model. If your work is mostly in another language, test with your own prompts.

Bottom line

DeepSeek V4 Pro for cheap long context at volume, Claude Opus 5 for the hardest work. Open and closed split the job cleanly here. With both on one key, you can measure the cost-quality trade-off on your own tasks instead of guessing.

Both models, with current prices, are in the model catalog. For Opus 5 against another large open model, see Qwen3.8 Max vs Claude Opus 5.
