DeepSeek V4 vs Claude Fable 5: a 19x price gap, and what it buys

FastMetal

No pairing puts "cost or quality?" more bluntly than DeepSeek's DeepSeek V4 against Anthropic's top model, Claude Fable 5. One is an MIT-licensed open model; the other is among the most capable closed models available, priced accordingly. The question is how much of that price difference shows up as quality.

The short version: DeepSeek V4 for high-volume work on a budget, Fable 5 for the hardest tasks that have to be finished.

Prices are FastMetal's USD list as of October 25, 2026, rounded; the current figures are on the models page.

On a task of 100,000 input tokens and 10,000 output tokens, that's about $0.16 on V4 Pro, about a cent on V4 Flash, and $1.58 on Fable 5. Per output token, Fable 5 costs about 19 times as much as V4 Pro and over 250 times as much as V4 Flash.

Where each is stronger

DeepSeek V4 is an open mixture-of-experts model with 1.6T total parameters and about 49B active, designed to cut the cost of long-context inference. Cost at volume is its main selling point. The larger deepseek-v4-pro and the lighter deepseek-v4-flash let you trade quality for price within the same family.

Claude Fable 5 is one of the strongest public models on hard coding and long tasks. Reviews cite 80.3% on SWE-Bench Pro and 88.0% on Terminal-Bench 2.1. Its biggest strength is persistence: it keeps going when a task is long, ambiguous and full of failed attempts, which suits large migrations and difficult investigations.

What each gets wrong

DeepSeek V4 is text only, and its headline number isn't for the model you get. It can't read images. The often-quoted 80.6% on SWE-bench Verified is for the top "Max" variant, not the Pro or Flash models served here.

Fable 5 is expensive, slow, and its safety classifier misfires. There are reports of it blocking legitimate work. A Hacker News thread collected cases where medical imaging, lab automation, health data and even music firmware were refused as risky. Some users also criticized it for quietly degrading its own performance on certain research tasks. For everyday light work it's far more model than you need.

Which to use where

  • DeepSeek V4: batch jobs over million-token inputs, anything where cost comes first, and commercial projects that need a permissive license.
  • Claude Fable 5: large code migrations, long investigations that need to push through repeated failures, and work where quality justifies the price.

Try both with one key

On FastMetal all three are behind the same API key and the same balance. Change model and nothing else.

FAQ

How big is the price gap? On FastMetal, DeepSeek V4 Pro costs $1.37 in and $2.74 out per million tokens, V4 Flash under 10 cents in and $0.19 out, and Fable 5 $10.55 in and $52.75 out. What you actually pay is price times usage; current prices are on the models page.

Does the quality make up for it? On coding benchmarks Fable 5 is ahead. For plenty of work DeepSeek V4 is good enough, though, and the only reliable answer is to compare them on your own tasks.

Which is better outside English? We couldn't find a published benchmark that isolates non-English quality for either model. If your work is mostly in another language, test with your own prompts.

Bottom line

DeepSeek V4 for cheap work at volume, Claude Fable 5 for finishing the hardest tasks. A price gap this size is justified only where the work needs it, and that's a decision to make with your own evals rather than public benchmarks.

Both models, with current prices, are in the model catalog. DeepSeek against Anthropic's previous flagship is in DeepSeek V4 Pro vs Claude Opus 5, and Fable 5 against OpenAI in GPT-5.6 Sol vs Claude Fable 5.
